Fra tirannide e democrazia: this is the expression that better than any other synthesizes the existence and the activity of Hipparchos son of Charmos, one of the most evanescent and ambiguous figures of the Athenian history between the end of the VI and the beginning of the V century BC. We know only that he was a relative of the tyrant Peisistratos and that was the first man ostracized in 487, after being for a long time the head of Peisistratos' Athenian supporters after the fall of tyranny. Even if very few, these evidences are extremely important because they characterize Hipparchos as one of the principal actors of the obscure events that brought Athens from tyranny to the victory of Marathon and determined that critical path of Greek history laying the foundations of the Athenian democracy of the V century. The investigation of this path has permitted to portray Hipparchos and has inspired this book's structure and title: Hipparchos was in fact witness of the difficult passage of Athens from tiranny to Cleisthenes' reforms, living as a protagonist most of the Peisistratean history. This investigation has given the possibility of discovering the personality of Hipparchos, and the analysis of the evidences pertaining to the son of Charmos has permitted to review the history of Athens from the end of the Peisistratean tyranny to the victory of Marathon.
